How to File a Car Insurance Claim
[Posted by: InsuringIndia Blog on 17-Feb-2016]

Gone are the days when owning a car was a matter of pride and exclusivity for a privileged few. These days, having a car is more of a necessity to ensure smooth running of personal and professional life. But with ownership of a car, also comes the responsibility of getting it insured.

In the current scenario, with an escalation in the number of vehicles and accidents, netting a reliable insurance cover is not just mandatory, but also an undeniable need. Motor insurance of your car is the assurance of its full financial protection and is mandatory under the Motor Vehicle Act 1988. The vehicle owner pays a fixed amount or a premium to the insurance company in the form of a policy for a stipulated time period, usually one year. In the event of a mishap, the insurance company gauges the damage and depending on the assessed value of the vehicle, pays compensation to the client. Many insurance companies also offer an additional personal accident insurance cover along with this policy.

But when a mishap like a theft or an accident occurs what should you do? It is a good idea to inform the insurance agency immediately about your loss rather than wait for your insurance agent to run around for you. Most companies these days have 24x7 customer helplines for such emergencies.

You should have your car insurance policy number, your car's license number, make and model of your car and your contact numbers.

Here is a checklist of other important things:

Why your car insurance claim may be rejected

·        An invalid driving license

·        Drunken driving

·        Not filling up insurance documents or facts like age, make of the vehicle properly

·        Reporting to the insurance company after getting damages in your car repaired on your own

·        Adding a CNG/LPG kit means additional premium. Not informing your insurance company about this will lead to rejection of claim.

·        Not installing an alarm in case of car theft

·        If you've bought a second hand car and haven't transferred it in your name in the policy copy.

·        Not filing a claim within 48-72 hours of a mishap occurring.

·        Damages from electrical or mechanical breakdown

·        Booking a car as a private vehicle and using it for commercial purposes

·        Consequential loss like entering a flooded area yet keeping the car in ignition which may result in engine breakdown

Top things to do while filing a claim for car theft

·        Immediately inform your insurance company

·         Submit the duly signed claim form, copies of the registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle, driving license, policy document (first two pages), the FIR and a letter addressed to the RTO intimating theft

·         Following the submission of 'non-traceable report' by the police and the claim is approved; the policy holder must transfer the RC of the stolen vehicle in favour of the insurance company.

Top things to do while filing a claim for car accident

·        Inform the insurance company and the police

·        Take details like number plate, make and model of the other car

·        Record all details of the accident scene and take pictures on your mobile, if possible

·        Documents that you are required to submit include a copy of the driving license, RC, FIR, original estimate and original repair invoice and payment receipt.

While buying an insurance policy for your car, take into consideration various types of policies which are available on online portals and compare them. Pay special attention to the features of the policy, additional riders and the cost. Thereafter, draw up a list of advantages and disadvantages and choose the policy that gives you maximum support in terms of the best and most comprehensive accidental coverage at the lowest premium rates. You can, subsequently, fill up the form and make an online payment. On realization of your payment, the policy will be confirmed within a matter of few minutes. All this can be done at your convenience from anywhere.
